Grant boost for rural economy
Farmers and rural businesses are reminded that the deadline is nearing to make an initial application for DEFRA,s new Rural Economy Grant Scheme, worth £60 million.
The grant offers funding for eligible projects of between £25,000 and £1,000,000 and will be targeted towards five key business areas including Farm Businesses, Agri-food Businesses, Rural Tourism, Forestry and Micro-businesses.
Applications will need to demonstrate that the grant funding received will make a significant difference to the performance of your business. The main priority areas for consideration for agricultural businesses will include nutrient management, animal health and welfare and water resource management.
REG will provide grant support up to a maximum of 40 per cent of the total eligible costs. The application process will be competitive and only those projects that offer the greatest return on grant investment are likely to be successful.
The REG application process includes two stages. Firstly, an outline of the project needs to be submitted by 30th April 2012, to include how the project fits in with the overall aims of the grant as well as the benefits that grant funding will bring to your business.
Preference will be given to projects that include new technologies, innovative ideas and investment which can be shown to be new to the industry and deliver best practice.
Applicants should hopefully be notified within eight weeks from 30th April 2012 at which time successful projects will be invited to submit a full application.
Any scheme seeking funding below £25,000 may be eligible via the Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme which is expected to open late April/May 2012.
