Compulsory purchase and utilities work on the farm – know your rights

June 23, 2020 at 3:25 PM

Farmers in Wales looking to find out more about their rights to compensation when utilities firms are on their land are being invited to join an online seminar on Compulsory Powers being organised by Farmers’ Union of Wales and Davis Meade Property Consultants.

The seminar takes place over the web/phone application Zoom on Tuesday, July 7 at 7pm with up to 50 places available for members of the Farmers Union of Wales to join in.

The seminar will be presented by chartered surveyors Eifion Bibby of Davis Meade Property Consultants and consultant Charles Cowap, building on their long association with the union.

The presenters will cover the basics of compulsory purchase including the legal rights of acquiring authorities and utility operators.

“Compensation is a really important aspect of this topic and will be covered but before you get to that stage it is really important to understand what the undertakers can and cannot do, and what  you should do to ensure that you come out of the process as well as possible,” said Eifion.

“Nobody can promise that having a utility operator on your land will be without problems but you can make sure you are as well-equipped as you can be to protect your farm and business from the worst consequences.”

The session will be about 90 minutes long and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion, with additional scope for follow-up discussions afterwards.

There will be a brief introduction to Zoom for anybody who is not familiar with it and further details will be sent once you have confirmed your interest in joining the session.  The session itself will be restricted to FUW members who have booked in advance.

Eifion Bibby is a chartered surveyor and agricultural valuer of long standing experience operating from his office in Colwyn Bay.  He will be joined by Charles Cowap, also a chartered surveyor and a consultant to the firm.  Charles was for many years Principal Lecturer in Land Management at Harper Adams, and is still a visiting professor at the University.
