Deadline approaching to apply for water abstraction licences

July 17, 2019 at 2:11 PM

Farmers who abstract water or who plan to do so are being reminded that they may need to apply for a licence, even though they were previously exempt.

“Most water abstractions in England now need a licence,” explained Kathryn Williams.

“If you used to abstract water under an exemption you must apply for a new licence or authorisation before December  31, 2019 and we are urging farmer to apply as soon as possible  so that the Environment Agency has enough time to accept and validate it before the deadline.”

New authorisation applications will be determined from January 2020 to December 2022.

“All forms of irrigation will now need a licence, including trickle irrigation which was previously exempt, and abstracting water into internal drainage districts, but not including land drainage activities,” she said.
