Farmers and landowners considering planting trees in England can receive funding from the Forestry Commission to support the design of new woodland under the Woodland Creation Planning Grant (WCPG).

To start with £1000 will be available to complete Stage 1 of the Woodland Creation Design Plan Exercise to identify the constraints and opportunities of a proposed planting.

At stage 2, £150 per hectare will be paid, minus the £1,000 offered at stage 1, to complete stage 2 of the Woodland Creation Design Plan Template. Supplementary payments for specialist survey work will be made if a need is identified at stage 1.

Woodland plantings less than 10 hectares will receive a minimum payment of £500 for stage 2. The total amount of funding is capped at £30,000 per project.

To be eligible the new woodland must be located in England and be a minimum of five hectares or more in total size. If split into different blocks, each block must be 0.5 hectares or above and 20 metres or more wide.

“If you are seeking grant aid to plant a woodland you should consider these minimum areas  when planning your proposal,” said Kathryn Williams of Davis Meade Property Consultants, Oswestry.

“Applications spanning multiple land holdings may be accepted and although you don’t need to own or control the land, a letter confirming the landowner’s support for the application will be needed.

“If the proposed woodland spans a border Stage 2 payment of £150 per hectare will only be paid on the land in England.

“You may include more than 20 per cent of designed open space in your plan if the constraints of your site make this necessary, but any designed open space in your plan over and above 20 per cent of the total project area will not receive funding,” she said.

If you’ve already applied for Countryside Stewardship, the Woodland Carbon Fund, the HS2 Woodland Fund, or submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) enquiry form to plant a new woodland, you are not eligible to apply for Woodland Creation Planning Grant on that site.

You can apply to the Forestry Commission year-round by completing the application form and returning it by email to:  WCPG@forestrycommission.gov.uk. For full details visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/woodland-creation-planning-grant
