CPD in the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS): External Learning Guide 2026
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is a core requirement of the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), helping farmers improve sustainability, productivity, and environmental outcomes. While training can be completed through Farming Connect, farmers may also use independent providers—but they must ensure the learning meets SFS standards.
What Counts as CPD?
For external learning to qualify, it must meet five key criteria:
-
Relevant to Sustainable Land Management (SLM) objectives
-
Clear learning outcomes (what you will learn or be able to do)
-
Evidence of learning (e.g. discussion, assessment, or practical demonstration)
-
Delivered in an acceptable format (e-learning, workshops, on-farm training, etc.)
-
Proof of attendance with details recorded and kept for 5 years
All CPD must be logged on the SFS Universal Dashboard by 15 January.
SLM Objectives
Training must support at least one of these:
-
Sustainable food production
-
Climate change mitigation and adaptation
-
Ecosystem resilience
-
Conservation of countryside, culture, and public engagement
What Does Not Qualify?
The following are excluded:
-
Social or networking events without structured learning
-
Travel time
-
Passive attendance without engagement
-
Sales or promotional sessions
-
Activities unrelated to SLM objectives
Farmers using external CPD are responsible for ensuring their training is relevant, structured, and evidenced. When done correctly, CPD supports both compliance and the long-term success of sustainable farming businesses.
