The Welsh Government has opened Window 6 of the Woodland Creation Grant, offering funding to support new woodland planting across Wales.
The grant is available to farmers, landowners and community groups looking to create woodland that benefits the environment while supporting sustainable land management.
Applications are submitted through Rural Payments Wales (RPW) Online, with applications considered throughout the window.
🌿 What the grant supports
The Woodland Creation Grant provides capital funding for woodland establishment, including:
• Tree planting and establishment
• Livestock and deer fencing
• Gates where public access crosses planting areas
• Water infrastructure such as troughs, pipes and water gates where appropriate
🤝 Long-term support
Successful applicants may also receive:
• Maintenance payments for 12 years
• Annual premium payments of £387 per hectare for 12 years to help offset the loss of agricultural income
✅ Key requirements
Applicants must have an approved Woodland Creation Plan before applying for the grant. The scheme requires a minimum woodland planting area of 0.25 hectares (or 0.5 hectares for agroforestry options).
‼️ Important deadlines
• Woodland Creation Plan must be verified by 6 November 2026
• All planting and capital works must be completed and claimed by 31 March 2028
Woodland creation can deliver a range of benefits including improved biodiversity, water quality, natural flood management and carbon storage, while supporting the long-term resilience of rural landscapes.
💰 Example capital payment rates
Eligible items include:
• Native Woodland – Biodiversity (1,600 trees/ha): £5,103 per hectare
• Native Woodland – Carbon (2,500 trees/ha): £6,982 per hectare
• Enhanced Mixed Woodland: £5,881 per hectare
Additional capital items are also supported, such as:
• Post and wire fencing with netting: £8.33 per metre
• Deer fencing: £13.32 per metre
• Metal field gate: £185.75 per item
